Hello,

How are you? A couple of days later than usual, because we wanted to include as much recent info as possible, we present you MintRed 7, the December issue.

Including a calendar that can't be bought, a basic dress that tranforms into an instant wedding gown (very Britney;-), designers who make Cuba's government officials fall in love with Belgian fashion, wordy symbols that stay silent, two 98% Belgians with a clear view and a hot new space for contemporary art that freezes your socks off in winter, MR 7 brings you the best of creativity from Belgium.

And while we have your attention: we wish you a very happy and inspirational 2005!

Love,

Ninette

On the site’abeno’ around 100 ‘concepts’ (friendship, honesty, hospitality,…) referring to universal values were brought together by graphic artist Geert Nys. Each concept is provided with a distinctive identifying mark (the abeno motif) and acts as if it were a human gene. Together they form the essence of our human nature. It is the intention to inject them into our society and to allow them to spread massively, like positive viruses. All kinds of media can be considered for this purpose: a receipt, a ticket, a flyer, newspapers and magazines, websites, clothing, all kinds of objects, … in short, everything on which or in which a beautiful pattern can be printed or incorporated can be used and acts as a mental power-point. The prints can be downloaded free of charge with acknowledgement from www.abeno.be Choice of colours and size of the patterns are irrelevant and can therefore be adapted at will. Geert Nys would appreciate if you let him know how, where and when you use these prints, so everybody who visits his site can enjoy your creations too!

Cuba loves Christoph Broich!
The Cuban government is mesmerized by the new sunglasses created by Belgian designer Christoph Broich for theo eyewear. President of the Belgian Socialist Party Steve Stevaert visited Cuba last October and carried presents for his hosts, as is usual in this kind of situation. The Flemish socialists opted for promoting Belgian fashion this time and brought the theo/Broich sunglasses with them for Fidel Castro and his Minister of Foreign Affairs, Felipe Pérez Roque -you can see his delight on the accompanying photo. We’d have loved to show you a picture of Mr. Castro wearing the sunglasses as well, but unfortunately he suffered an accident just before the meeting. According to our information however, he loves his new designer sunglasses as much as his Minister does. And so he should- they are lovely indeed.

Andy Wauman- Fleur Boonman     -     98% Belgian
December 10, 2004- January 22nd, 2005

For the second time running, Antwerp gallery Fifty One Fine Art Photography presents new work by Belgian contemporary artist Andy Wauman. He uses manipulated symbols and logos from streetculture such as the stars & stripes, questioning their meaning in the process. Society criticism is mixed with a desire for complete freedom. Andy Wauman: “Imagination is always three steps ahead of the statement itself.”

At the same time you can see the work of audiovisual artist Fleur Boonman, who lead a nomadic existence in Africa, eastern Europe and Cuba for a couple of years and photographed people and situations there by way of a diary. Currently she’s working on video installations and a movie, in which she wants to express how she experiences the world around her and her place in it- her self-portraits are perfect witnesses to that.

“Dedicated to a proposition”
November 20th ’04-February 20th ‘05

For the opening exposition of Extra City, the new space for contemporary art in Antwerp, curator Wim Peeters asked 20 Belgian and international artists to share their views on this subject with you.

The term “Dedicated to a Proposition” is borrowed from Abraham Lincoln’s public address in Gettysburg in 1863, describing an utopian political horizon in times of great anxiety caused by civil war. Both anxiety and desire recur in the continuous play of global powers and this expostion can be seen as a bridge towards the political situation of today. Artists include Gert Robijns, Damian Ortega, Luc Tuymans, Enrique Metinides and Joost Conijn, while Terence Koh (aka asianpunkboy), Robin Rhode and Mike Bouchet start their artist-in-residency in Antwerp, working on future projects for Extra City.

Another exciting project is ‘Hotelit’, a hotel room annex artwork by Vadim Fishkin and Yuri Leiderman in cooperation with MuHKA, that’s installed permanently next door to Extra City –and can be rented for 70 euros per night. Living, breathing and sleeping art- only in Antwerp!

FFI & UAMS present a fashion management master course
Antwerp is a rising star on the fashion firmament: the presence of the international port, the excellence of the diamond trade and the rising fame of the Belgian designers in the world of fashion indicate that Antwerp is a blooming tradecenter.
In addition to that, the management know-how of the University of Antwerp Management School (UAMS) provides an excellent academic framework. In collaboration with the Flanders Fashion Institute (FFI) the University of Antwerp Management School now developed Fashion Management, a master programme for managers dealing with -or operating in- the international fashion industry.

Theory and practice join together in three fashion modules, co-ordinated by experts from the fashion industry. Long overdue and very helpful for Belgium’s existing and upcoming fashion superstars!

Haider Ackermann wins Swiss Textiles Award

From 25th November to 28th November 2004, GWAND Foundation organized the GWAND Fashion Festival Lucerne, a platform for fashion and its key-people from all over the world with the aim to propel young and contemporary designers forward and to link them with the professional industry (media, buyers, press-agents...) For the already established designers it is an occasion to make new networks or to strengthen the contacts with their partners. Last year Belgian designer Raf Simons scooped up the big prize -the Swiss Textiles Award- and this year, yet another designer who trained in Belgium won: Haider Ackermann. The prize consists of a financial contribution dispersed over one to two years equivalent to approximately 100.000 euros. Generally, it is intended for use toward a show/presentation or for PR, but it can be tailored to the needs of the designer. With the many difficulties that independent designers still face today, we’re sure the price will be very welcome- and very well deserved too!

Designer Kaat Tilley in Fashion Museum Hasselt

On saturday december 4th Belgian designer Kaat Tilley spoke about her own work in Modemuseum in Hasselt in the series ‘Ont(k)kleed’.

The museum recently acquired a magnificent dress from Tilley’s collection ‘Skeletons, to the bone’ and at this lecture the designer told the story of the dress –and of her work and collections in general. They show a dreamy world that balances between female fragility and power. Kaat Tilley is inspired by the media, literature and culture: each new collection starts with drawings (Tilley is a talented painter as well), text fragments and illustrations in a recycled book. After choosing the right fabrics she then translates each drawing into a wearable collection.

VisionFragments calendar 2005 - I love a man in uniform

We have 5 calendars to give away!

Photo: Charles Fréger

The most original calendar to appear in recent years is here again and the theme of Stockmans’ VisionFragments 2005 is ‘Uniforms’.

Uniforms are increasingly turning up in fashion, but too often it concerns only simple copies of the classic garments. VisionFragments 2005 displays both the original uniforms and the work of designers and artists who work explicitly with uniforms. Because this theme resulted in many portrait-style photographs, a square calendar with a circular cut-out was chosen, like the photo frame on the mantelpiece.

One page per week, 52 photos in all, with work by Bruno Vekemans, Dirk Bikkembergs, Herman Tallein, Scabal, Haeftling, Charles Fréger, Anthony Goicolea, A.F. Vandevorst, Björn Tagemose, Verne Photography and more. The VisionFragments calendars are not for sale, but if you’re lucky you can win one of 5 ex. that MintRed managed to get their clammy little mitts on. To win one, just send us an email with: Uniform? Yes please! and bide your time…
