Hello,

A bit later than usual due to the holidays, here’s Mintred nr 3, the August issue. We’re introducing a new category today: ‘New Talent in Fashion’ and from next month on we’ll also add ‘New Talent in

Photography’.

In every issue we’ll propose talented people from Belgium, whom we believe willl go far in their respective fields in the near future. If you have suggestions for creatives you feel fit in one of these categories, or know of an exciting new restaurant, shop, exposition or other news from or about Belgium, please let us know.

Thank you and enjoy the beautiful summer!

DESIGNERS AGAINST AIDS

(event)

World famous Antwerp club Café d’Anvers celebrates its 15th birthday this year and during the month of october there will be parties galore, with the world’s best DJ’s, expositions and other festivities. As the cherry on the cream cake 15 famous fashion designers, DJ’s and other creatives have been asked to create a text, illustration or photo that will be printed on the front of a black T-shirt. All the profits of the sale, that will be done both in the club itself and on their website, will go to the King Leopold Institute for Tropical Medicine in Antwerp,  to help fund their groundbreaking AIDS-research, just as was done for the project ‘Designers Do Denim’ in 2001. As the T-shirts will be sold on the Café d’Anvers website too, people from all over the world can order one or more of these limited edition must-have pieces –and support AIDS-research in the process. By the time of writing this newsletter, names such as Dirk Bikkembergs, dEUS-singer Tom Barman and DJ’s Sven Van Hees and Buscemi have confirmed, with lots more names to follow. Please have a look at www.cafe-d-anvers.com regularly, to make sure you can order your favorite T-shirt(s) while stocks last- and support AIDS-research in the process.

For his second collection (summer 2005) Daniel Henry follows his story about circles and sunshine stripes, using pure linen for these designs. The colors (pearl white, jade green, raspberry red and black) are knitted in solids, stripes and random chine, or combinations thereof. His item of the season is a knitted ‘guêpière’ made out of cotton with a hint of Lycra, proposed as a twin-set –or simply irresistible as a mini-dress.

DO THE FUNKY CHICKEN!
(expo/event)

Cosmopolitan Chicken Project: Red Jungle Fowl-Genus XY

From July 11th until Ocotber 10th in Z33 in Hasselt

Some years ago, Belgian artist Koen Vanmechelen started to breed new varieties of chickens, mixing international species that are a national symbol in their own country. For instance, the cuckoo of Mechelen in Flanders ,mixed with the Poulet de Bresse from France would become the Mechelen Bresse, presented for the first time in museum Z33 in 1999. Result of this passion is the Cosmopolitan Chicken Project, some results of which can still be seen in Hasselt until October 10th.

An important part of the project is the search for the original chicken, also knows as Red Jungle Fowl, because all other varieties grew from this animal. Vanmechelen travels to Asia regularly to observe this chicken in her natural habitat. Where his quest will end, nobody knows. But you can admire the benefits he reaped so far- and there’s more to it than eggs, we promise you! For instance, the artist invited children to help him build a Golem, there was a banquet with chicken specialties, instead of bells, cocks will crow from the church tower in Hasselt to wake its inhabitants and on huge billboards surrounding the cathedral you can see loads of different chickens from alll over the world. If you’re quick, you can still attend the lecture artist Vanmechelen gives about his project on September 21st, or listen to a philosopher, an antropologist, an art historian and a biologist talk about chickens all afternoon long, on October 3th. Riveting stuff.

Next month (september) the brandnew website of Z33 will go on-line as well, where you can discover which exciting projects they have in store for this autumn and for 2005.

(fashion news)

For the 3th time running, from July 15-18 the International Talent Support fashion contest ITS# took place in Trieste/Italy, and this time was wisely named ITS#THREE.

In front of an international jury, with members like fashion designers Raf Simons, Ennio Capasa and Antonio Marras, creative director Wilbert Das of main sponsor Diesel, Vogue Hommes International editor-in-chief  Richard Buckley, fashion editor Hilary Alexander and buyer Maria Luisa Poumaillou of the prestigious Maria Luisa shops in Paris, the 23 finalists, coming from fashion schools all over the world, put their best feet ànd creations forward.

Belgium always does well in this contest and this year was no different, as the Collection of the Year (worth 13.000 euros to create a new collection) was won by Demna Gvasalia, a student at the fashion department of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Demna is only starting the 3th year of his studies this october and we say: way to go, boy!

ANTWERP STUDENTS CREATE OBJECTS FOR LOUIS VUITTON
(fashion news)

Louis Vuitton is 150 years young and to celebrate the occassion, the house asked fashion students from the 2nd year of the Antwerp Academy to design objects around the theme ‘travel’.

Five designs were chosen and next october the final winner will be selected. His or her design will be made in two copies: one for the ModeMuseum and one for the new Louis Vuitton shop in Antwerp.

So far, so good. What is really remarkable, is that lovers of unique and very limited edition LV objects will be able to order one for themselves as well, through special order in the Louis Vuitton shops worldwide.

We love all five designs, but one in particular strikes our fancy: the umbrella with integrated flute designed by Akiko Murata. Very useful in Belgian weather- never again do you need to get wet or bored!
